The picture that graces
the cover of your program
captures a moment inCanadian sports history.
Not surprisingly, it wasone of Ben’s favourites.
The joyous photograph was taken in 1968 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York at the presentation of the All-American awards for U.S. college athletes.
In the picture, Arnold Palmer, the reigning King of golf, honours an obviously thrilled Ben Kern as the first Canadian to be named a First-Team All-American for his achievements at New Mexico State where he won 10 U.S.
intercollegiate events.
That connection remains strong today even after Ben’s passing, and Arnold Palmer continues to recognize Ben’s greatest passion in golf—the development of Canadian junior golfers.
The Kern Cup, to be launched in 2006 as the premier tournament for boys and girls in North America, will share proceeds from a new tournament that will honour Mr. Palmer.
A tribute titled “The Return of the King” will officially launch Kings & Queens, a three-day mixed seniors event that will make
its debut September 12-14,2005 at Weston Golf & Country Club in conjunction with 50th anniversary celebrations of Mr. Palmer’s
first PGA Tour victory (the 1955 Canadian Open) at the club.
Mr. Palmer and legend Marlene Streit, who this fall will be the first Canadian inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, will hit the opening tee shots.
“Mr. Palmer is very pleased that proceeds from The Return of the King will go towards two causes that are very special to him, children’s hospitals and junior golf, and in particular The Kern Cup,” said Glenn Goodwin, President of the Greater Toronto Area Golf Association (GTAGA), which operates the Kern Cup, Kings & Queens, and The Toronto Star Amateur championships for men and women.
Monies raised from the Canpar Ben Kern Legacy Pro-Am also will help fund The Kern Cup to be played annually in the GTA.
Mr. Palmer summed it up nicely this past June when he signed the treasured photograph from 36 years ago: “To Ben, his family and the GTAGA’s ‘Kern Cup.’ A Canadian Grand Slam! Arnold Palmer.” The King and Mr. Kern Arnold Palmer honours Ben and The Kern Cup
